    Hello

ILT for 031 on Page 131

    1. first line - A tablespace may consist of zero or more segments

    2. Segments - Atablespace may consist of one or more segments.

Could you pls clarify what is the minimum segment requirement for a tablespace - zero or one?

    Thanks

I am not sure what ILT says on page 131..
but technically what I think is A tablespace can have 0 or more segments.
because when a new tablespace is created with create tablespace command , there is no segment in it..Its created with 0 segments.
Segments are only created when we start creating objects in this tablespace..
    Hope this helps..

Hypothesis: A tablespace consists of one or more segments.

    Q. What is a segment made up of?
    A. Extents.

    Q. What do you specify in create tablespace command related to extents?
    A. minextents, initial extent, next, etc.

    Q. What is the minimum number of extents (default value)?
    A. One

    Q. What does a tablespace consist of?
    A. One or more extents.

    QED.

but when u query dba_segments after creating a new tablespace..it would show 0 rows for that tablespace..
    what does that tell u..
that this tablespace has no segments??

So this should be the proof that a tablespace consists of one or more segments? Or is it a joke?

You know and everybody else know that tablespace consists of one or more datafiles. Datafiles are the only physical element that constitute the tablespace. When it comes to the tablespace-segment relationship, only the following statement is valid: "Tablespace may contain zero or more segments".

    Truth: zero or more segments.
