Whoops! Sorry, the Oracle EE price I posted was the £ price not the $ price.

As for hardware, Intel servers are far cheaper than Sun boxes. AOL claim their Linux servers cost one tenth of their previous UNIX servers and give better performance.

    Something to think about.

    Cheers

SQL Server EE - $19,999 per processor
    DB2 EE - $20,100

Are these the prices for all countries in the world? Don't they vary from country to country?

Short of merger or acquisition, i don´t think Sun can survive the next 5 years. There is too much competition in the Unix/Linux space.

You think Sun will not be able to hold on? Big companies still use Sun. We have about 200 servers, almost all run on Sun Solaris. All databases (> 95%) are Oracle.

I wont give Sun Microsystems more than 10 years life if they dont change their actualy policy

They will be killed by Intel and Linux (mostly Intel)

I'm only familiar (more or less) with Oracle's licencing and pricing policy, I don't know anything about MS or IBM habits.

Oracle has a universal price list, valid and in effect worldwide. So that price is valid everywhere. Now depending on the region/country they might be acceptable for larger discounts, I belive, but the list price is still $40,000.

My current project uses Sun servers, but we are not buying new ones. We are piloting Linux on Intel and will try to find a cheaper alternative to Solaris. Things look promising.

Sun dominated the unix server market during the internet boom, but now it seems difficult to grow the business. IBM and HP are competitive and they can cross sell. Last i heard, Java was generating little if any money. Notions of transforming Sun into a software company seem far fetched.

    We´ll see.

Hey Nick (and other DB2 administrator),

Have you done anything with XML in DB2?

ie.. stored data in XML format and queried it?

What do you find wrong in Sun's policy?
