If you really want to shutdown in a hurry, you can do a shutdown abort. For some reason Oracle is doing a shutdown normal. You can also stop the service in the service control panel. This might be resolved with a patch, if you can find 7.3.4.5. Otherwise 8i has a lot of features that are worth a look, so does 9i.

If some transaction in progress, it will try to kill the transaction, if able to kill, wait for rollback to complete.

if not able to kill any transaction, it will wait for it to complete.

    Thanks.
