    What is the number of transactions supported by oracle8i and oracle9i in a second?

    It purely depends upon the hardware setup.
    I read 1 to 5000 per second.

    also transactions_per_second can be set in the init.ora file.

    That parameter is perhaps planned for Oracle release 12i, when the database will be so fast that you'll actually want to limit its speed!!!

    Seriously, there is no such parameter. You probably ment TRANSACTIONS_PER_ROLLBACK_SEGMENT ....

    How many transactions can Oracle database handle? There are at least two parameters missing in that question. First one, as Tamil allready pointed out, is what computer system are we talking about (HW + OS). The second one is, what type of transactions are we talking about. You know, on a given system transaction A could be executed in miliseconds, while transaction B on the same system can last for hours. If you are interested in lab results on precisely described systems with standardised type of transactions, visit the official benchmark site http://www.tpc.org
