    I think you've misunderstood. They guy wanted two different names for a single instance, not the ability to join two instances together.

    Hi TimHall ,

    The case which i have told has only one instance but it has a database link pointing to itself ( with different name could be used as an alias of sid while configuring tnsnames in client systems ) tricky bit .

    u may wonder why anybody would like to create a database link pointing to itself . i am sure even this new name can be be used in configuring clients .

    thus serving the purpose of two sid's . u can try it out .
