    Question

    Hi.

I am running Oracle 8i (8.1.6) on an NT 4.0 Server. I am having problems with the database hanging when I issue the shutdown immediate command at the SVRMGRL prompt. It never shuts the database down, I have to manually stop the service in NT services and then restart it. I do not care for this method.

No one is connected to the database except for the SVRMGRL user. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

    Thanks

    Hi,

There are a couple of things that can cause a shutdown immediate to 'hang':

    1. Rolling back a large transaction (obviously not this in your case)

    2. smon taking a long time to clean temp segments (how large is temp ts and what are extents sizes?)

    3. pmon unable to clean external connections i.e those obtained through links

    4. dead connections not being detected correctly.

Check for traces in udump/bdump and see if the process is hung or simply taking a long time (look for hight cpu i/o processes)

    Hi,
Check the process whether it is still running or terminated.

If it is running, check ur system resources and others loads on that system.

    ..... Else ... u have to investigate.
