hai i am really confused .
What is the exact difference between the Service name and the instance name in oracle.
Should the both be same?

In my exoerience service_name has always been set to the ORACLE_SID.
This service_name is also entered in listener.ora
If a service_name is entered without correct service_name as it is in the listener.ora, you will NOT connect.
Once you have eliminated all of the impossible,
whatever remains however improbable,
must be true.

hi sona,
prior to 8i, you could've made a service with any name you want to connect to a database server, but in 8i and later your service name has to be the same as the instance name.
i'm waiting for anyone to correct me if i'm wrong.
Regards.

service_name has to the SID of the database and instance_name is the name of instance. If you are in OPS environment instance_name can be different.
correct me if I am wrong.

prior to Oracle 8i service name and Instance name could be different, but from 8i onwards service name and instance name should me same unless you are on multithreaded system where each instance of the same database will have different name.
Hope it helps

you can have sid test1 and db_name test2 with no problems
just naming conventions

Dear Tarry,
I think SID stands for session ID which is also same as your database name. Prior to Oracle 8i SID and database name could be different, but now they are suppose to be same.
Plz correct me if I'm wrong...
