    Hi,

I will be going for certification training shortly (for my work).
Is it better to get 8i with the 9i new features or just jumping in 9i?
(We will be using 9i, but I'm afraid some concepts aren't covered in 9i OCP.
I do have some 8i experience, but certainly not knowledgeable on all topics)

Also, did anyone take the FastTrack certification courses?
Are they much more hands-on than in-class or on-line courses?

    Thanks

If you're going to be using 9i, and intend sticking with this job for some time I would go straight for the 9i track. There are fewer exams and the rumour is that the exams are a bit easier.

There is little point doing the 8i track if you're never going to use the skills. The main advantage of doing the 8i track first is you can upgrade to 9i. There isn't a single downgrade exam so if you switch jobs and would like the 8i OCP you'll have to do 5 more exams.

    Cheers

I have asked Prometric about that and they said that the 8i upgrade exam is equivalent to the 9i downgrade. That is, after you become 9i you can pass the 8i upgrade and thus downgrade to 8i.

I wouldn't trust what Prometric says...I would get that in writing from Oracle. Oracle also makes no reference to "Downgrading" in any of their Candidate Guides.

Julian: I think that would be a good idea but it would surprise me since it would mean 1 less exam.

I still feel that Prometric isn't the one who should be making that call...only Oracle can say that they would accept that as a "Downgrade" option.

So if things start going really shaky in the newconomy, you might just about be able to down grade to an older version.
A a few companies have here gone to the old economy...
For these vendors as long as you pay(which ever way as a candidate, or a client) it don't matter, they downgrade you to any version.. (Ok Ok i'm just back from a long vacation that explains the quirkiness )

    Cheers!!

I am having a similar situation.

We build marketing databases in our company. Most of the work involves lot of PL/SQL and less of DBA skills. They all are cold databases, not production. We are currently using Oracle 8i.

Is it better to get certified in Oracle 9i or 8i, Thinking about myself couple of years ahead . If I go for 9i certification won't I learn some of the basic DBA work that is currently reqd. at work.

I have just completed my certification for developer path so I think I will have to give only three exams.
