    Hi all,

If I set the UTL_FILE_DIR=* on my database server A, how do I put the file on somewhere else, let's say I have another computer B. How does utl_file_dir=* work???

    thanks

In order to write on another server, you would probably have to nfs mount the other server's filesystem to your local box.

    Thanks Jeff,

    The docs didn't say much.

Why is it a big risk to set UTL_FILE_DIR=*???

Could you give me some reason so I can talk to the senior guy here. I ask him to set it to specific location but he want to set it to *

When you set utl_file_dir=* you can open a file called '/usr/local/oracle/product/817/bin/oracle' or '/usr/local/oracle/product/817/network/admin/tnsnames.ora' and write to it. (Which, by the way, is a bad thing)

    For Your Information:

UTL_FILE does not work over mapped drives in Windows NT, but does work OK in Windows 2000. Oracle put it down to a problem with the operating system that's out of their control.

Also, using the JServer to access remote drives can prove tricky.
