    Question

    Hi

I have an NT 4 server which has just been through a hardware upgrade (extra CPU and extra RAM and new network card). The IP Config had to be re-setup and now the OracleServiceSID service startups up OK but the instance and database (version 8.1.6) fail to startup.

The Alert log contains the following :
CKPT: terminating instance due to error 220

The CKPT Trace file contains :

    *****************************
    Dump file d:\oracle\8.1.6/admin/bdump\demoCKPT.TRC

    ORACLE V8.1.6.1.0 - Production vsnsta=0

    With the Partitioning option
    JServer Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production
Windows NT Version 4.0 Service Pack 6, CPU type 586
    Instance name: demo

Redo thread mounted by this instance: 0

    Oracle process number: 5

Windows thread id: 257, image: ORACLE.EXE

    *** SESSION ID:(4.1) 2002-07-19 12:33:21.078
error 220 detected in background process

Any ideas on what may be wrong?

    Thanks

The problem was with one of my control files - when I removed it from the control_files list in my init.ora the database started up OK.

Yes the problem should be in your control files , but don't be afraid just copy the correct control file and rename in init.ora , all will be fine.
