    Hi,
We are in the process of implementing Oracle Resource Plans and while reading the documentation I came across the follwing.

What is the Database Resource Manager?
Typically, when database resource allocation decisions are left to the operating system, you may encounter the following problems:

    Excessive overhead

Excessive overhead results from operating system context switching between Oracle servers when the number of servers is high.

    Inefficient scheduling

The operating system de-schedules Oracle servers while they hold latches, which is inefficient.

Please note the statements above in bold . I am confused as to what they mean.

Can somebody please throw more light on them.

    Thanks

It's tough to look intelligent while commenting on something that is taken out of context.

it's talking about operating system processes switches

you have to read about unix books to understand context switches in processes, this not about Oracle but Operating system. Context switch is expensive, for example most latches avoid context switch , instead it spins since spinning costs less that a context switch

Scheduling, it must be talking about schedule daemon of processes in OS as well. I am not UNIX expert you might as go to google and search for unix process context switch and process scheduling
