Every time a script connects as "internal" as sysdba....

    sqlplus
    connect / as sysdba

....I get an audit file in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/audit

Can I turn this off? If not, perhaps I should use SYSTEM as the logon?

    By the way:

AUDIT_TRAIL=DB for my other audit functions.

For security reasons, Oracle generates audit every time someone connects as internal. In earlier releases of Oracle, internal was unaudited (Security black hole).
