Hi,
Currently we have our production servers on Sun Solaris. Our management is entertaining the thoughts of moving our databases from Sun to Red Hat Linux. I would like to know how stable is Oracle on Linux and also if any known performance issues with Linux. DB Version is 8.1.6.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Very stable, we have one production database running in 8.1.7 in Suse 7.2 with 16GB RAM. 93 day uptime already, no performance problems, no strange Windows "must" boot dodgy problem
But it is probably not as scalable as Solaris and cluster software for Linux is not as advance as other Cluster software such as TruCluster. But as other things such as journal filesystem, LVM all runs pretty good without major problems. Veritas should release vxfs and veritas cluster filesystem for linux soon as well
The customer is so happy with linux that they want to setup almost everything in linux now (they used to be a Windows shop) such as mail server, dns server, ldap server, proxy server etc

we have oracle 8.1.7 on Red hat linux 7.2
This machine runs on production mode.
O/s is up always and always . No problem.
Installation of linux is also simple. GUI based .
Oracle instaltion on linux is also simple.
Most important client is comfortable and happy to work in RED HAT linux.

I have 7 instances from 8.1.5 to 8.1.7 on RH 6.2 and 3 instances on Solaris (+ 1 RAC 9.0.1) + 1 instance RH 7.2 with 9.1.0 in development env.
I haven't any problems with this databases on Linux except one
(8.1.5, but it was unstable version of oracle)
avg uptime on production servers 4-6 monthes, like solaris.
now i going to install 9.2.0 in rac on RH 7.2,
(i like desicion with Suse + Rac 9.2.0, but this is not my stuff).

Well, I'm not able to say this ! I found my first installation of Oracle on Linux (Red Hat 7.2) tough, compared to Oracle installation on Solaris. Of course, I did complete the installation successfully after some tweaking, avoiding kernel rebuilds !! I found it relatively easy on Solaris though.
Well, everything said and done, we are moving from windows to linux shortly. So, here I come, 'Oracle on Linux'.

Installing Oracle8i was a big headache. But 9i seems to be a little simpler...but still the a lot of configuration and changes are there...anyway linux is programmer's OS so we should not compalin about it.
