Hi guys,
I have one year exp with PowerBuilder develepment. Another two years I spent with Oracle environment.
Right now I am still preparing myself to take the 9i upgrade exam.
But after that I still have doubts whether I should go with developer path or try to engage in another db certification like DB2 and SQL server. The catch is I like Oracle development because I once used them during my work but on the other hand I also like to learn other db systems. After I spent some time with Oracle I got attracted with db systems.
FYI, my employer assigned me with Oracle DB services and also require me to do DB2 services as well in the future time.
I still have a bond to serve my company for another 1+ year.
So guys, do you have any suggestions, ideas, concerns or comments on this one from any angles?
Thanks.

Hi Ric
You're a lucky man, DB2 (presumable UDB 6 or 7?) and Oracle in the same site.
As you know DB2 and Oracle are the two biggest players according to Gartner Group reports.
If you've got the time, motivation etc I reckon you should do the IBM cert.
There's alot of comment in this forum about the value of certification but briefly my view is :
Provided you do not "cheat" with brain dumps and go through the curriculum with a practice DBMS :
Certification shows an employer you have a basic understanding of most of the product. It also shows you're motivated to learn something off your own back.
Certification gives a CV an edge over an equally experienced non-certified candidate, although I reckon that diminishes if the experience level is 3years+.
Certification is a good way to expose holes in your knowledge.
I would do the IBM cert if you're going to be getting experience in the product anyway. As many people have posted, there aren't many jobs for certified individuals with no commercial experience.

I agree with you in some ways. IBM DB2 cert is really a good exposure of any DB prof. But you see on the other hand most company prefer a DBA who has a good knowledge on other field down the line such as development tools and app server. So I am a bit worry over my decision to take which path.
Actually my boss still thinking of adopting DB2 or not because here in Singapore I don't see enough opportunity to play with DB2. Oracle is the most predominant database around followed by SQL server.
I like to hang around in DB path like MySQL, SQLserver and DB2 but I have to choose the better path for my career.
What do you think the most highly-seeked profs these days? Are they database specialist or multi tiers generalist?
Anyway thanks for your reply.

Totally agree man.
In singapore, most of the companies are using Oracle. And,most of them are on version 8, but very few on Oracle 8i.
Second follow by MS SQL Server 7/2000, i believe the market for SQL server will pick up in the near future. Coz, Microsoft, they planning to launch 64 bit SQL Server.
Moreover, the Intel will come up with their latest processor, 64 bit ititiuam. Which intel have bought over alpha company, and use their skills and knowledge and develop their processor.
By the time, i think, Oracle will face a great challenge with Microsoft.
But, come to business solutions on database, Oracle will still stay ahead of Microsoft.

Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crackpot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.
