TWO LISTENERS (8i/9i) ON SAME PORT?

I have two 817 db's , one 901 db running on same win2000 laptop. The oracle homes are Orahome81 and ora9i and I have two listener files at right places and they are starting properly.

My problem is when I change the oracle home (from selector) from 817 to 9i, I still get 817 SQL*PLUS and I am unable to connect to 901.

I went ahead and changed the default registry (HOME0) to all ora9i entries - still unable to connect to 9i.

My questions are:

1.Can two listeners on two differnt oracle homes listen on the same port (1521) for two different databases?

2.Do I need to change the registry everytime I change my db from 817 to 901, eventhough I changed the oracle home selector?

What is the correct way to go about this problem of multiple databases in multiple oracle homes?

If you think about it, how would that ever work? A request would be made on 1521 and which listener would service it?

If you have two listeners, set them up on two different ports.

Thanks for the reply. I have setup port 1526 for the 9i listener. However everytime I change from 817 to 9i I had to change

1) ORACLE HOME (bin directory) USING HOME SELECTOR
2) REGISTRY (using desktop saved registry file)
3) DIFFERNT SQLPLUSW.exe ICONS (one for 817, one for 9i)

to make things work. Is all this necessary, or is there a simpler way?

necessary otherwise how do you think how windows can determin which one you want to execute?

You can use the same sqlplusw.exe for both databases. Just configure your database aliases (via tnsnames.ora).

Why not just use the 9i Listener for both 8i and 9i databases, is there a particular reason to have the overhead of two listeners?

You can also use the 8i listener - just add in the 9i database information. 8i and 9i listener are forward/backward compatible.

Be careful with the 9i listener with 8i databases. I have had several problems with JDBC Thin connections on 9i listeners listening for 8i databases.
