    hi,

on unix create 2 instance with two different sid's.

open different terminals and set the sid's and create different databases for each sid.

when u want to start a particular instance set the appropriate sid (ORACLE_SID=test) and start the d/b.
U can start both the d/b at the same time on single machine.

Note that ORACLE_HOME is same for both the d/b ie., u r using same oracle s/w installation for both the instances.

    Sonia,

    Good day.
I am using Personal Oracle 8i as already it had said
previously. Therefore the operational system is the
WINDOWS (in this case windows 2000).
Exactly thus, Sonia, grateful for the attention.

Just run the Database Configuration Assistent to create a new instance. This will set up the relevant services and create the database.
