How does oracle know whether it has do a media recovery or instance recovery.

have you got backup & recovery book by Rama Vulpuri? (something like that I forgot his name) It is explained there, it´s a long text I will try to resume later when I get the book

But basically there are two checks when instance startup. Something like start SCN and stop SCN (more or less I read it long time ago) if start or stop SCN is infinity then it means instance crashed etc etc
