Does anyone know of an advantage to truncating SYSDATE versus storing/selecting the entire SYSDATE string (minus the obvious reasons of having the time available and using it in a PK)? Is there any sort of space savings (I think not) or performance gain to the trunc?

No space savings nor performance gain by trimming off the time portion of the date.

There is nothing called truncing a Date for Storage porposes, it is used only for queries without the time part.
