    how do I go about doing this?

    e.g.

    spool filename_TODAYS_DATE.lst

    SELECT xxxxxxx

    spool off

    Maybe you can do something with this:
    clear;
    set echo off;
    set heading off;
    set feedback off;
    set pagesize 0;

    spool c:\temp\xx.sql
    select 'spool c:\temp\'||to_char(sysdate,'yyyymmddhh24miss')||'.lis'
    from dual;
    spool off
    @@c:\temp\xx.sql

    select sysdate from dual;

    spool off
