    Gents,
I am planning to purchase a box where i can work on unix/oracle to play around at home.
What would be the best option from hardware/software point of view?

    Would appreciate any useful inputs.

I hv Oracle 8.1.7 on RedHat7.2 at home. It works well. Maybe you can try Solaris.

    LINUX

I think Linux is your best bet...that way you can get a lot of support from free website; which will not be that case if you use other UNIX OS.

I have a Sun Blade ($950 new from Sun) with 1 Gig ram.
The machine is running Solaris 8. I'll move to 9 eventually.

I've installed 9i on it and everything runs great. I've set up a coupl of linux file servers and then utilized nfs to give access to the Blade. This config works great, and it's not too expensive.

I like linux, but I don't like the Oracle bugs on linux I ran into a few RMAN bugs on linux that solidified my descision.

So, I will continue to run 9i on Solaris...
