Hi,
I am a windows person and has just installed Red Hat Linux on my machine so that I can learn Linux/Unix.
I have a few questions on this topic
1. Is managing Oracle on different flavors of Unix a lot different . If I learn it on Linux will it suffice for Solaris 8 and vice Versa
2. Are there many production shops who actually use Oracle on Linux
3. For a Unix starter like me what areas of DBA should i concentrate if I have to be comfortable in managing Oracle on Unix independently Basically in what ways is managing Oracle on Unix different than managing Oracle on Windows.
4. I have a sun Ultra 10 machine also with 128 MB of RAM. For 8i minimum suggested RAM is 256. Will I be able to install 8.1.7 on it.
Please advice.
Thanks
Ronnie

You can if you think you can.

1) Very similar with a few exceptions. Performanc tuning that needs reference to the OS is different. Lots more command line work. Get used to using the VI editor
2) I think Amazon currently use Oracle on Linux. I think Yahoo do also. They definitely use Oracle but maybe they use FreeBSD for the OS??. AOL have just gone Linux. Not sure if they use Oracle though.
3) Get this book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072223049/
4) You should get away with it. I ran a 8.1.7 Designer6i instance on a SPARC with 128M. It ran like a dog but it did work.
Cheers

Thanks Tim,
I have already gotten the book a couple of weeks ago.
What particular areas should i concentrate more upon and learn after the oracle installation is done with.
Any tips from you and others ......
