    Question

    Hi !

I want to install Oracle 8.1.7 on the same computer as my production 7.3.4 database but in a new oracle home. Purpose is to then upgrade the database using Migration Wizard. Question: Is it safe to install 8.1.7 when the database is running ? NOT upgrade, just install the binaries and programfiles to minimize total downtime. Any suggestions or Metalink docs ?

    Regards Mattias

Sure, you can install 8.1.7 while 7.3.4 is up as long as you use a seperate $OH.

It depends. In Windows you must stop all oracle services. In Unix you should have the database running and install your new software in other oracle home.

Sorry, forgot to say that my OS is Digital Unix/True64 v4.0.

Still ok to install 8.1.7 while database is up and running ?

Yes, no problem as Jeff said you.

    Cheers

Anyway it is recommended always to have a valid backup of your software and of course of your database (if possible a valid cold backup)
