    Hi Everyone,
I am kind of confused between the terminologies "Migration" and "upgrade". My understanding is that they are analagous to "version" and "release" differences
Could anyone distinguish these two terms ? When is migration required versus upgrade and vice versa ?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
MIGRATE means moving from one version to another version of Oracle ie. Oracle 7.3 to Oracle 8i whereas UPGRADE means moving from one Oracle release to another Oracle release within the same Oracle version ie.Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 to Oracle 8.1.7.3.0

    migration vs upgrade

Thanks for the mail .That's what I have been thinking too. But if you read Oracle documents they mention upgrading from 8.x to 8i, 8i to 9i etc. So are they generally using the term migrate and it may or may not mean upgrade ? In other words is migration a general term and upgrade is a subset of migration ?

Oracle Documents have a tendency to contradict themselves...
