I need to move a 9i database from one Win2000 server to another. The new machine is a mirror of the old one - identical directory structure, same version of Oracle. Can I simply copy all db files(dbf, log, control) from cold backup, create a service and start the instance. The name will be the same. Will I need recovery, reset logs, create controlfile. Most of the docs refer to changing dbname and/or file locations. Am I wrong in thinking I can just copy file, create service and start instance?

    You are right.

You can just restore from the cold backup and you wont require recovery in this case.

You can if you think you can.
