    boss

    I have oracle 8.1.7 in linux 7.2 o/s

now i have to install 9i in the same o/s and in the same machine.

I have only 6 disk file partitions. (usr/usr1/usr2/ etc )

Thing is my db is up always . i cannot shut it down just to do installation , also i donot want to mess up with 8.1.7 settings.
( oracle_home, all database files etc)

so what are the things i should take care of before and after installation

    Thanks in advance.

You may want to install Oracle 9i as a different user, in a new Oracle home with its own listener listening on a port that is different from your 8.1.7 database. Just make sure that you adjust you sga sizing so that both databases will fit into memory. You might also want to keep the startup files separate. If it is a production database, trying it on a test box can be a good idea. Its nice to work out the kinks before you mess with a production database.
