Boss
Oracle version 8.1.7
o/s - windows 2000.
The objective is to access oracle database from my home computer.
I have oracle 8.1.7 installed and it is running good.
The port number is 1521 . This is within the office network.
now since during sometime in the weekends if i have to acess the oracle database from my home computer
(where oracle version is the same and i have windows 98 loaded ) ,
i try to create a tnsnames.ora entry specifying the oracle sid, host, protocol, port address , still it doesnot get connected .
I am sure that it is port 1521 problem. how can i fix this .
Can u advise me on this . ? how can i get connected from my home ?
Thanks in advance

I am not good in network terminology.
I can access UNIX MACHINE and work on unix file systems .
I have installed SECURE CTR 3.0 AND when i mention there ip address i get connected to any unix machine from my home. I can access unix machine any time .
but for oracle i cannot. In my office I have oracle database installed on windows 2000 in my office.
sitting at home i want to access the oracle database there.
I think i am behind firewall
any suggestions what should i do

In my main u can have 2 most probable problems:
1) as, say Sam, this is problem with port # 1521 on ur office firewall(s).
2) name of ur home mashine is not name for ur office NT domain and u can't
use oracle server name in tnsnames directly.
u have to use ip address or connect to ur office NT network as member of domain.

Thanks shestakov and sam
when i add a entry tnsnames.ora file
the host name is i give the ip address of the machine where the oracle database is installed and up & running .
I guess i haveto give my home machine ip address to the network admin guy and tell him to show my home machine ip address in our network ? . right ? and i think after that it should work
