Hi all, I want to change the compatibility parameter of my database from 8.0.5 to 8.1.0. These are the steps I am planning to follow :
    1. Shutdown the database
    2. Change the init.ora file
    3. Startup the database

Do I also need to run ORACLE_HOME/MD/c805u813.sql to re-install the functionalities?

    I'd swap 1 and 2.

re-running c805u813.sql is OK, but should not be necessary

So you're under no pressure to edit the file properly whilst your database is down.

    Thanks.
Well Ken, in my case, it is just a development machine and I have just installed the server and still testing it - so I want to shutdown the database before making any changes to init.ora.

I tired doing the above without running the ORACLE_HOME/MD/c805u813.sql file and I am having no problems so far !!

Just a couple insignificant sidebar notes...

The initSID.ora file is not opened/used while the database is up and running.

I'd make my mods, then "startup force" to bounce it.
