    Hi all!

Hope all well at your end!

Working on Oracle v8i with OS as NT.

I am having this error as below in Oracle Names server:
I had used the setup option without using Region Database while setting up Oracle names server through Oracle8 Assistant!

WHILE PASSING THE COMMAND SET SERVER AS UNDER,DO I HAVE TO PASS THE HOST NAME OR THE SID NAME.WHAT OTHER CONFIGURATION IN SQLNET.ORA FILE DO I HAVE TO SETUP IN ORDER TO ACTIVATE ORACLE NAMES SERVER.

AFTET THE SET UP OF ONAMES,WHEN I SELECT DISCOVER ORACLE NAMES SERVER,I KEEP ON GETTING ERROR MESSAGES AS THERE WERE NO ORACLE NAMES SERVER DETECTED.

P.S:PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE DETAILED STEPS INORDER TO CONFIGURE ONAMES.WOULD BE GRATEFUL!

    C:\> namesctl set server megvserv

Oracle Names Control for Solaris: Version 8.1.6.0.0 - Production on 22-AUG-2001

NNL-00018: warning: could not contact default name server
    NNC-00003: error opening stream (DESCRIPTION=(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=*)(SERVICE_NAME=
    megvserv))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=megvserv)(PORT=1521)))

I am not able to proceed further .is there any configuration problems in any of sqlnet.ora /names.ora /etc ...

Can you please tell me where exactly i am going wrong ...

    Thanks & regards,

    Amit.

Do you have an existing Names Server on your network? Can you ping it?

    One important detail:

Recently i found that the Oracle Names software must be chosen as part of the install. It is not default.

You may be able to work with namesctl and the GUIs, but you cannot move forward without the Names software.
