Hi,
I need to install a oracle client (8.1.7) on one of the solaris boxes, which does not have any oracle installations.
Can anybody give me the steps to install client for oracle 8.1.7 on unix.

Use oracle installer. Choose client only instead of full database.

Hope you are not kidding...
Here is the steps...
1.Create unix account (mostly userracle,Group id 500(DBA))
2.set env variable ORACLE_HOME (your home location),ORACLE_TERM,ORACLE_BASE...etc
insert cd...
3.cd /cdrom
4.cd oracle8i
5../runInstaller
you will get GUI...(if u r running from console) otherwise
setenv DISPLAY (your machine ip address)
6.Welcome screen...next
7.File locations....Give your home location where you need software to install.....next
8.I think it will ask for unix group..DBA next
9.Type....software..check client next
10.choose the list...required.
11.install.
There you go...
Hope this junk is use full..
