I recently changed the default Oracle username/password. The developers access the Oracle database for crystal
reports via sql server using odbc and somewhere within sqlserver they have hardcoded the default password.
They can no longer connect/read their reports. I'm wondering
if the solution to this will be to create a database link to allow them read only access to the Oracle database. I'd like to change the password in Oracle anytime without worrying about the effect this will have on other applications.

Any suggestions/comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Anyway you look at it they're going to need a username/password that you can change at any time.

I agree with you that it should be a schema that gives them read-only privs to objects.
