    A bit of emergency here!

Have just restored database from 2 yrs ago and though the db is up (by starting the services manually) no one knows the SYS and SYSTEM passwords.

Is there a way to change these passwords without having to log in as SYS or SYSTEM?

rename your password file and recreate your password file. Once you log in as SYS you should be able to change the password for SYSTEM if you need to.

As suggested, have logged into svrmgrl as internal and managed to change the password.

Cheers for all the help : )
