    Thumbs up

    Hi All,

I have encountered a problem in recovering the data from the database crash.

i am not able to get the things done maybe because of the little experience in the recovery area.I am looking for help .

    Let me describe the scenario.

My oracle server was oracle 8.0 and it was on windows nt server 4.0.
Nt server crashed. But i was able to get the physical files used by oracle and datafiles too i.e. all the files in the oraclehome\database folder. but there are no files in the archive folder within this folder.I think database was not operating under archive log mode.

There is no logical backup of the database.I want to recover the data from these physical files only.Is this possible?
I think it is a kind of media recovery.

I even tried to recover but got no where.
What steps i have to take in order to recover the data in such a case.
Whether i have to create a database first or i can use these files only to create the database .Pls help me out .I am in a fix.
    The data is very crucial.

    Pls explain the steps.

Do you have a cold (offline) backup?

If you were not in archive mode, then you cannot recover to the point of failure.

What happened when you tried to start the database?

I assume that the cold backup you took is before the system crash. In this case restore all the datafiles, redo log files and control files to the original location and startup the database.

If you are telling that your cold backup is taken after the system crash then I afraid it won't be a good backup.

    Sanjay ,

yes the back up is of the time after the system crashed.

i can't start the database because os is gone and the inbly option i am left with is the formatting the hard disk..
but i have taken the files safely on other hard disk...

can't i create a database using these files....
because i have control files, init.ora and other datafiles too..

    pls suggest...

If you are sure that your database is not in archivelog mode then just check how did you take the backups. Do you use export utility. or just cold backup.

Let me know if you have export, if yes then u don't have to worry. just install os , install oracle, create database. create the schemas and tablespaces as per the old structure. and just import

and if you don't and too u don't have the cold backup before the crash then i'm sorry there is no other way.

better u checkout whether the cold backup is before crash.

    all the best

    Santosh,

i have the export backup but that one is also too old.

the cold backup is the one after the crash.

i think u r right...its not possible to recover at all.
well i can recover the data from the export backup
    atleast i'll have something....

but there should be someway of getting the data out
of files ...like in my case.....

per sjadhavdba's email, you can recreate the database and import your dmp file to the database if you have the good export. You will only recover the data to the last time you did an export. It's very important to understand that you have to create the tablespaces so they can be matched with your dmp file. In order to find out what tablespaces in your dmp file, do an import with SHOW=Y and find out

    good luck
