    whats the set scan [on/off] for in sql*plus?

    SET SCAN ON /OFF

    Controls scanning for the presence of substitution variables and parameters.
    OFF suppresses processing of substitution variables and parameters.

    ON allows normal processing.

    Syntax :

    SET SCAN {ON|OFF}
