Is this book specific only for Oracle 9i, or it can be used for Oracle 8i also ? Is there the same book for Unix and Oracle 8i ?

Julian, do you recommend the Oracle 9i DBA Handbook by Kevin Looney, et al.? or should I wait for the 2nd edition of this book? 9i is still relatively new so I'm kinda reluctant to buy this book even if its from Kevin Looney. Thanks

Very good, useful, I am just in the beginning. I am no Unix expert so I will learn a lot from that book.

I would wait a bit. Oracle9i Release 2 (due in march) includes quite a bit of functionality, especially relating to XML. You might want to wait for this to be included before you part with your cash.

It's about time Oracle lifted it's game in the XML arena. Oracle approached the company I work for to be beta testers of the XML functionality.

I think the XML functionality in 9i is already pretty good but it will be cool to see what more they add in Release 2.

Oracle seem to be avoiding the issue of XQuery which Microsoft and IBM seem to be embracing (or trying to). I think Oracle could be shooting themselves in the foot by moving too slow here.

It will be interesting to see if relational databases are ditched in favour of XML databases over the next few years. Most of the big players, except Oracle, mention it every so often.

Notice the way I casually altered this thread from talking about UNIX admin to XML

    Cheers

ALTER THREAD 21431 SET content = 'XML' ;-)
