seems to me a problem of the RAM. What are the init.ora parameters for SGA ? Viz DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS, Shared pool size, Log buffers etc.?

more probability - suse kernel parameters, because oracle tried startup instance first time (for database creation) and can't.

You might also want to check the docs and verifies if you kernel paramter share mem and semaphores are set properly. On the system side check /var/log/messages for any erro on memory allocation or semaphores or share mem. Best of luck to you.
