    Question

    Hi! ALL,
I have already installed 8.1.6 on solaris under username "oracle8i". Now I want to install 8.1.7 and I have created a new user called "oracle". The problem is when I run "runInstaller " it is giving the following error
"you do not have permission to write to the inventory /data/oracle/8.1.6/oraInventory. Installation cannot continue. Permission denied."
I am trying to install in directory /data1/oracle817
ORACLE_HOME is not pointing towards /data/oracle/8.1.6

I am not able to figure out why it is happening.
    Please treat this as urgnt.
    thanks in advance

    Hi

It sounds like your dir/files does not have write permission.

It is know that for Unix/Solaris platform, we need to give the CHMOD permission for the entire Directory/Files thro ROOT directory.

    Hope this will help you...

    Hi

What is the group for your oracle user. It should be oinstall.

set group as oinstall and try. I hope this helps you.

Try edit or rename file /var/opt/oracle/oraInst.loc.
There is a pointer to Oracle Inventory. This file is created during installation.
