    ORacle 8.1.7.2.1
    The SMON crashed due to ora 600 and the database went down, now I am not able to bring the database up. I tried rebooting the server to release memory, but still again the SMON crashed when trying to open the database. I have logged a tar with Metalink but the response is slow. Please help any advice.
    Here's the error I get in the alert log:

    I had to do a shutdown abort to shutdown oracle fully. Then I connected internal and tried to start it up, it mounts the database but is not able to open it I get the error:
    Ora 3114: end of file communication channel, then when I try to reconnect it gives me tns protocol adapter error, I have to again do a shutdown abort......, I rebooted the server to release memory and then tried to restart but no success. There are 3 other instances in the same server which are running ok.
    Oracle is looking at the trace files but no response yet.

    Oracle said it might be a new bug, they asked to to set event in the init.ora and the database is up now, but I will have to upgrade to 8.1.7.3.

    Did you set your SID properly before trying to start?
    did you try

    startup mount
    recover database;
    alter database open;

    Please give us what Oracle asked you change an event in init.ora .. I case if we got the same problem we can fix it ..

    the event I had to set in the init file is:
    event="10061 trace name context forever, level 10"

    Yes I had set the SID correctly, now after setting the event I had no problem in starting up. But the problem now is I have started getting ora 600 errors again in user trace files:

    Check v$datafile and see which tablespace is file#3. Use dbverify to see if the datafile is corrupt.

    dbv filename=datafile blocksize=database blocksize
