I have two Oracle version (8.1.6, 8.1.7) running on the same box Linux 6.2.
I already migrated the database to 8.1.7 now and everything work great. When I am trying to export the schema and it give me this error messages:
Export: Release 8.1.7.2.0 - Production on Tue Jan 22 10:48:41 2002
(c) Copyright 2000 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
EXP-00056: ORACLE error 1034 encountered
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
EXP-00005: all allowable logon attempts failed
EXP-00000: Export terminated unsuccessfully
Does Oracle try to use exp.exe on 8.1.7 to do an export ??? I even specified the right exp.exe on 8.1.7 to do an export but it still not working.
Please advise

You should be logged on as a user with all of the environment variables pointing to your 8.1.6 database. 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 should have been installed as and run as different users.
You can even specify the physical path for the exp utility i.e.
/oracle/ora816/bin/exp system.....ect.
Also make sure that your 8.1.6 database is still running.

Thanks for your reply.
What if I installed them as the same user (ORACLE). As I mentioned earlier, I even pointed to the right EXP executeable but it's not working.
Any advise ???
Thanks

You can always create another user for 8.1.6 and setup that user to have the proper environment variables in its .profile file. Then you can log on as that user and do the export. You may also want to start the database as that user.
I guess you know by now that you should have done an export before installing Oracle 8.1.7 and also installed 8.1.7 as a different user.
I deal with smaller databases and I don't normally setup a machine to be a multi-homed machine. I get the export uninstall the old version and install the new version of Oracle and then do the import.
