    Hi all,

Would someone please to me the following output, is the server healthy? If there is a problem, can someone please identify it/them, thanks a lot.

By the way, what does column 'w' actually mean? From Solaris's man page, it says 'runnable but swapped'...But I still don't get it, what's been swapped? Memory or else? Or there is other explanation. Thanks.

I am not a Solaris expert but what I know about VMSTAT is that FREE should not be so low (it is like 70M). PI (Page In) and PO (Pages Out) is OK, it should be close to 0 bur ID, the last column should be in the high 90s. It isn't in your case.

Thanks Julian. However, it's still not clear to me, I need a more in-deepth explanation.

From what I see, the feeling is that you either need more RAM or you need to reduce the size of the SGA.

Can you please explain according to what information made you think that.

You have only about 70M free! That's not much at all.

vmstat output alone is not enough information to determine if you need to add more RAM.
How much swap do you have and how much is used?
How much physical RAM do you have on the box?
How much does your SGA occupy?
How many CPU's do you have?
What are your top 10 processes?

Jeff, doesn't 70M FREE mean that there are about 70M of unused RAM (at the moment)?

I know there are a lot more information that I need to supply before determining what's actually needed.

However, can you or someone please
    1. What does column 'w' presents, from Solaris man page,
it says 'swapped but runnable', but what does it mean? What's been swapped? Memory?

    2. Make comments on the output, just as if someone as you in the interview 'What can you see from the output of each column?'

    Thanks a lot.

'w' shows the number of processes that are able to run but which are swpped out. Swapping is the movement of active processes of memory to disk. It is more dangerous than paging. Paging means the movement of inactive processes of memory to disk.
