It is a fancy way of saying "a place where you put stuff".

For example, a metadata repository is a place where you can store and possibly arrange your metadata.

A repository in what sense ? Do you mean Oracle Designer ?
In that case, it's basically just a term for the database containing all your entity/table/module etc definitions.

Relating to DBs, it's just a central store of information, typically describing something. People use the term in a number of contexts:

Designer - The repository holds all the design information you enter. The repository is made up of tables, views and APIs that the designer application uses.

Enterprise Manager - The repository holds all information about your infrastructure including instance, listeners, nodes, webservers etc. The repository API is used by the OEM application to interact with that data in numerous ways.

General - People often say things like "We use Oracle to provide a central repository for our business information" etc.

Don't get too hung up on it unless you have a specific question about a specific repository.

    Cheers

HI there thank you for quick response to my question.

I am new at this. I am trying to become a self tutored DBA.

The reason why i am asking this question is because i have problems login to the oracle management server.

I have checked under services and oracle management server isn't there.

question: Can the Oracle management server be on local PC/server?

I read that someone said you need to create a repository!

I did and now i am capturing a baseline which is taking forever.
And if i login to the oracle management server it gives me a error Unable to connect. Verify that you have the correct hostname and status!

The management server can be on any machine, not just the DB server. The service name should be:

    OracleManagementServer

If you don't have the management server service use the installer to install it. Depending on the Oracle version you may need to do a custom installation to get it.

Assuming you have set up the management server and repository properly try logging in using:

    Username: sysman
    Password: oem_temp

If this works you'll be forced to change the password.

Check your network connections are fine. Try using the ping command to test your connections.

    Good luck

Tim the Server is not on the Network...
I am messing around with it, before i put in on the network.
Won't it work if i install the management server on the server that i am practising on?

    Yep! That's fine!

That question about the Oracle management server being on a local PC/server made me think you wanted the OMS on a different machine to the DB. My mistake.
