Hi Friends,
We have a new application (front-end) developed in Visual
Foxpro, which I have no knowledge yet. We would like to connect it to our Oracle Database. I think the only way is by
using ODBC. Can you teach me how to configure/install ODBC
so that our Visual Foxpro apps will be able to access our
oracle DB?
Thanks

By installing Oracle you have installed the server-side ODBC connectivity already.
On your VFP machine install the Oracle client. This will install the client-side connectivity bumf that ODBC will use.
Create an entry in the following client file:
ORACLE_HOME\(network or net80)\admin\tnsnames.ora
Create an ODBC DSN.
Go for it

Hi Tim,
Thank you very much

Hi,
BTW, my db is v7.3 , can I use 8i client? or just 7.3client.
Thanks again

Hi.
The any client should be fine. We currently use a a mix of 7.3, 8.1.5, 8.1.7 & 9.0.1 clients and servers with no problems.
I had some problems with the first version of the 8.1.7 ODBC driver, but a patch fixed it.
Cheers

When in doubt, pick 'C'.

Hi All,
Thanks you for your replies. BTW, i have created an ODBC
DSN name test.dsn, can you teach me how to use it? Say,
in VFP (visual frox pro) I want to select name, salary from the
table EMP how will I be able to get the info?
Thanks again

I've not got a clue about VFP but:
You should be able to use ADO from VFP since ADO is an Active X. This is how I would use it in ASP:
Dim conn, rs
Set conn = Server.CreateObject("adodb.connection")
conn.Open "DSN=TSH1;UID=scott;PWD=tiger"
Set rs = Server.CreateObject("adodb.recordset")
rs.Open "SELECT * FROM my_table", conn, 0, 1
Do Until rs.BOF Or rs.EOF
-- Do something
rs.MoveNext
Loop
rs.Close
conn.Close
Set rs = nothing
Set conn = nothing
Not sure if that would help.
I seem to remember hearing that VFP can use remote views to access an ODBC database. I think this means that a view is created in VFP than links to the ODBC table. When a request to that table is made all the data is brought back to VFP where it is processed. This is similar to the default processing of linked tables in access. Not ideal, but it will get you up and running quickly?
I'm afraid that's about the bset I can do.
I'm sure MSDN must have some stuff about this. Try there.
Good luck!
