I suspect you do not know what you want. What exactly do you wanna extract from the rowid?

    Check the package sys.dbms_rowid

For example dbms_rowid.rowid_row_number extracts the row number from teh rowid.

In 7.3, ROWID is has the format 'BBBBBBBB.RRRR.FFFF' where BBBBBBBB is the block number, RRRR is the slot(row) number, and FFFF is a file number.

    I hope this helps you.

ROWID has been there at least since 6.0.24.

In 6 and 7 it had the three part format discussed by Julian.

In 8 it went to a 4 part format.

I understand in 9 it has mutated again, but I haven't looked into how.

No, AFAIK ROWID format hasn't changed in 9i, it hasn't changed since 8.0.
