Upgraded RMAN catalog from 8.0.5.3 to 8.1.6.3.4 and recreated RMAN catalog as 8.0.5 rman has so many issues including the datafile growing to 9 GB.

Now the initial datafile attached is 300 MB and has grown to 880 MB with out there being any backup done..

why is it eating so much of space

The growth is obvious as the script create catalog would create a number of tables and views and populate them. So don't worry. At the time of backup make sure you run the script $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/prgrmanc.sql to delete the catalog deleted catalog entries. These need to be purged periodically by running the script.
