    Hi

    In My Case (Oracle 816)

    DB_FILES = 254

    I hv already created 230 files. Now i want to increase DB_FILES to say 500 to avoid any errors what all i need to do.

    - Just increase the DB_FILES paramater and bounce database
    OR
    - I hv to recreate the controlfile

    ?

    The db_files paramter is a kind of soft limit and the entries in the control file are like a hard limit. The questions is, "What is your control file set up for?". Is it more or less than 500? If less, you will have to recreate the control file. Also, I have read, that setting the db_files parameter to high is a waste of memory, becuase each user session maintains entries for the datafiles. I hope this helps you.

    sure ?

    Hey,

    R U sure that i need to recreate the controlfile.

    I got following from metalink dis. forum that i need to just change the db_files parameter and it will automatically increase maxdatafiles.

    "When you increase the db_files value then the maxdatafile parameter is automatically incremented this feature is from oracle 8.x .previously the only solution for it was to recreate the controlfile but from oracle 8 you need to change the db_files parameter the maxdatafile paramtere got incremented automatically.

    In earlier version db_files parameter inflates the DBWR average scan depth and in 8i the algorithms are changed. So this parameter has no effect other than taking some bytes in control files.

    In Oracle8 the controlfile would accommodate more datafiles based on db_files parameter"

    Please advice......

    It sounds like your are more up to date on this for 8i than I am. I will have to test it tomorrow.

    Thanks
