    how do I find out what protocol I'm using?

    If you want to see what protocol an alias is using you can look at $ORACLE_HOME\Network\Admin\TnsNames.ora or just do a TNSPING TNSALIAS

    Question is vague, but I'll attempt an answer:

    1) Run Oracle Installer it'll tell you what protocols are installed
    2) In UNIX check $ORACLE_HOME/orainstall/unix.rgs
    or the install log.
    3) Novell : Modules at prompt or PISNTALL.NLM
    4) WINx run NetConfig it'll know..

    AT unix prompt fire:

    $>adapters

    check listener.ora

    I think same command should exist on windows.
