    Hi all!

Working on Oracle v8i 8.1.6.0.0 with Os as NT.

    Query:

1.Is it ok to have Pctincrease set to 1 in Production DB at the client's place for Implementation so that SMON could automatically coalesce free extents whenever required!

Would LMTs(Locally managed Tablespace) be ok for this or ordinary Tablespace be ok.

Or should I set it to 0(pctincrease) as of now in our Development DB we are having Pctincrease set to 0.

    Thanks&Regards,

    Amit.

You should be alright setting it to 1, but ensure minimum extent is set.

    monitor over time.

Once you have eliminated all of the impossible,
    whatever remains however improbable,
    must be true.

If you do that, make sure your tables/indexes are created with a proper PCTINCREASE or otherwise they will inherit the value of 1.

I would not personally set PCTINCREASE to 1. "ALTER TABLESPACE DATA01 COALESCE;" does the same as SMOM, even quicker. SMON sits in a very tight loop while coalescing, and consumes close to 100% CPU.

always 0, if Oracle cant find a big enough extent it does coalesce automatically anyway
but if you are using 8i why use dictionary managed tablespace may I ask?
