    Hello Moderators,

I executed "alter database backup controlfile to trace;" but nothing was recorded in the trace or alert.log file. These files are still in the background dump dest.

What is hapenning and how can I get around it?

    Hi ac,

When you execute the "alter database backup controlfile to trace;" command, the create controlfile command will be located at your udump directory as a new trace file.

Thanks for the reply, but there's nothing in the UDUMP directory and I've not experienced this before.

    Hi

    Do you get
    'Database Altered'
after you execute the statement. If you do then the trace file must have been created.

Ensure you are checking the correct directory with :

    show parameter user_dump_dest

Once you have eliminated all of the impossible,
    whatever remains however improbable,
    must be true.

Check you init.ora file for the setting of udump.

    That is USER_DUMP_DEST.
