Anyone have any thoughts on how much $$ certification preparation should cost? I was working as an 8i DBA for about a year but was recently laid off. I thought getting certified would help me in looking for a new job. However, I don't want to spend $1800 to get certified if it's not necessary.

The exams cost $100 each (with discount from OTN). To get adequate coverage of the material, I suggest buying prep guides from two sources. I would think $200 should cover the books. Personally, I like Jason Couchman's books as well as the ExamCram series (for 8 & 8i, not for 7).

Jeff, in Europe each exam costs a bit more than $200.
Couchman's books are very good.

In Australia it's US$125 per exam about $250 Australian. Certification for 8i in Oz would cost minumim say, $1250 + $250 for texts.

Oracle Univeristy wanted to charge me ~$10.000 for the 3 day course Oracle 8i: Implementing Scalable Systems 8.-10.10.2001 (organized just for me). Now, tell me please, could a 3 days Oracle course be worth ten thousand US dolars??
Compared to that the $220 OCP exams are chicken****.
