    how can you connect sql*plus from your local PC if your password is set EXTERNALLY?...they prompt me for the password when I try to use sql*plus from my local PC...
    what should I do?

    What OS you are using? you need to set ORACLE_SID, TNS_ADMIN and all other required registry parameters to
    use OS Authentication.

    identified externally means OS authetification, you have to logon with OS user who is also a database user who has been identified externally when he was added in the database, your PC user is probably not the right one

    adding to above...

    also, you need to check what is os_auth_suffix you are
    setting from init.ora. You should have a user in database
    which is 'your set os suffix'+windows username set as
    externally.
