    this is dependent on
    (1) availability of the database.
    (2) tolerance level
    (3) size of the database
    (4) maintenance staff availability

tell us about to discuss further.

The strategy should be based on your SLA and/or back up and recovery plan. These plans should cover all the back up and recovery senarios that your customer wants you to plan for. Then test these plans on development machines or borrow hardware from a vendor similar to what you have and test away!

    more details

    Here we are:

    Thank you for your replies!

We have a 7x24 production db on solaris and we backup db by rman. I'd like to test all the cold&hot backup files on the same box if possible and not very difficult. Other wise different box is OK. What is procedure step by step ?

    Thanks again!

do not test on the production database.
start with a crash during hot backup by disconnecting power and then reconnecting. Then try all senarios possible like deleting temp, rbs, data, index files and then restroing them using backup files. as u r using rman for backup recover using rman. that gives hands on experience to u.i think u know where the rman scripts r located.use them.
also play with deleting one archived log file which is required for recovery, and also try by deleting online redo logs.
try disaster recovery senario also.. all this u do using rman only.

    Think September 11.

The biggest mistake people make in testing backup/recovery scenarios is that they never fully test and DOCUMENT how to recover in the event of a disaster. Test all recovery scenarios completely before you say "done".
